Letters to the Church (Francis Chan)
If God had it His way, what would your church look like? The New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Love challenges readers to be the Church as God intends. Do you want more from your church experience? Does the pure gospel put you in a place of awe? Are you ready to rethink church as you know it? Sit with Pastor Francis Chan and be reminded that you are a part of something much bigger than yourself, something sacred. In his most powerful book yet, Chan digs deep into biblical truth, reflects on his own failures and dreams, and shares stories of ordinary people God is using to change the world. Chan says, "We've strayed so far from what God calls Church. We all know it. We know that what we're experiencing is radically different from the Church in Scripture. For decades, church leaders like myself have lost sight of the inherent mystery of the Church. We have trained people sitting in the pews to become addicted to lesser things. It's time for that to change." When Jesus returns, will He find us caring for His Bride--even more than for our own lives? Letters to the Church reminds us of how powerful, how glorious the Church once was ... and calls us to once again be the Church God intended us to be.

Living Through Lockdown (Preben Andersen )
From the first news of the Covid-19 outbreak in the UK, to the hope arising from a vaccination programme being put into place, Rev. Preben Andersen has written poetry to keep a record of our shared 2020 pandemic experiences in the UK. His poems cover the politics and the scramble to understand the science, but also the daily experiences and sacrifices we have all had to make, and the challenges for frontline workers, school children, separated families and others. Behind it all, Preben recognises a God who is still on the throne, and working in our lives even as our experience of church has changed.

London (Edoardo Albert)
This book takes the reader through London and its spiritual history - what its inhabitants believed, what they worshipped, where, when and how; the landmarks, the names, the issues and the arguments. Written in a more or less chronological way, it is interwoven with Albert's own spiritual journey. From its earliest days when Londoners would have worshipped pagan gods, through Roman occupation, the coming of Christianity, and the later waves of other faiths - Jews, Muslims, Hari Krishnas - this book takes the reader on a fascinating journey.

Man on a Donkey (H. F. M. Prescott)
SECONDHAND

'The most immersive book I've ever read... Truly brings Tudor England to life' Frank Cottrell Boyce, The Times

'One of the finest historical novels ever written' TLS

A forgotten literary masterpiece,
The Man on a Donkey is less about the great figures who shape historical change and more about what it's like to live through it.

This is a sweeping, immersive historical novel that invites the reader to inhabit Tudor history as it unfolds: Henry VIII's divorce from Catherine of Aragon; Robert Aske's rebels fighting the Dissolution of the Monasteries; the machinations of Cardinal Wolsey and Anne Boleyn.

It is, quite simply, one of the finest historical novels ever written.

Marking Time (Barbara K. Lundblad)
The preacher is too often caught between biblical and contemporary time. Residing first in one, then in the other, the preacher must somehow find a way to bring the two times -- separate as they might seem -- together. The temptation of course is to capitulate to one side or the other of this tension. The preacher can reside solely in the biblical time, offering the congregation what amounts to weekly lectures on history and archeology, spiced up with the occasional moralistic conclusion. Or, setting up shop permanently in contemporary time, she or he can offer commentaries on society and culture that occasionally tip their hats in the direction of Scripture. A third way, contends Barbara Lundblad, lies in marking time, a way of allowing biblical time to speak to the contemporary world and vice versa. When the preacher marks time, he or she admits that there can be no one-to-one correspondence between the world of the text and the world of the congregation. Nevertheless, the preacher demonstrates that when the biblical text is let loose upon our day to day existence, it challenges and judges, redeems and sanctifies it, infusing it with new meaning. Likewise, contemporary situations, needs, and experiences open up new possibilities within Scripture, allowing the congregation to see truth in the text they had never before discovered there, allowing them to discern the leading of the Spirit through the text and into the present moment. In this volume, which grows out of Lundblad's 2000 Beecher Lectures delivered at Yale Divinity School, the author presents both an argument for the ongoing intersection of the biblical and contemporary worlds, and examples of how that intersection might take place.

Memorable Loss: (Karen Martin )
Dementia is experienced in different forms, in different ways and is coped with differently by different people, but with nearly 10 million new cases every year, it is something many people face. It’s tough on those with the disease, but it is also incredibly hard for the loved ones around them. Karen Martin’s story about her friend Kathleen, however, is overwhelmingly one of love and persistence. Despite their nearly half–century age difference, their commonality drew them to each other, and their genuine friendship uplifted them both. Charting the story from pre–diagnosis to Kathleen’s eventual passing, this moving tale highlights the difficulties and joys of facing dementia, through the lens of friendship.

Reviews

... I couldn't help thinking as I read that what Karen and Kathleen experienced was a gift from God to them both but also to all who can eavesdrop through Karen's account. ... a profound meditation on memory and personhood, human identity and Christian discipleship. I'm delighted to see that this book has finally made it into print.

--Mark Meynell (European Associate Director, Langham Preaching, London)

Are we more than our memories? Karen Martin shares her journey to focus on a person, not a disease; a loved one living with memory loss, not a dementia victim; and a friend's present and future, not just her fading memories. This book will be a fount of wisdom for anyone who cares for a friend with dementia.

--Dave Deuel (Senior Research Fellow, the International Disability Center; Catalyst for Disability Concerns, the Lausanne Movement; co-author, 'Disability in Mission: The Church's Hidden Treasure')

This book is poignant, insightful and hopeful. It will equip and edify in equal measure.

Mere Christianity (C.S. Lewis)
One of the most popular and beloved introductions to the concept of faith ever written, ‘Mere Christianity’ has sold millions of copies worldwide. The book brings together C.S. Lewis’s legendary radio broadcasts during the war years, in which he set out simply to ‘explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times’. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity’s many denominations, ‘Mere Christianity’ provides an unequalled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to absorb a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith.

Ministering to Addicts (Trudy Makepeace)
Ministering to Addicts has been written to help inform ministers, churches and other Christian organisations who seek to open their doors and hearts to those who find themselves struggling with or recovering from addiction. This booklet is by no means exhaustive but as a former addict of 18 years, Trudy Makepeace shares personal insights from her own journey, as one who has experienced healing and freedom. Trudy brings this together with what she has learned and encountered as a support worker and then manager of a Christian rehabilitation centre in South Wales, and recently as an outreach worker and evangelist. Whilst there is not one prescriptive pathway to see people step into and maintain freedom from addiction, Trudy believes the content of Ministering to Addicts is vital to the individual’s ongoing freedom and recovery. Her hope is to bring insight and confidence as you support others on this journey.

Ministries of Mercy (Timothy Keller)
Why would someone risk his safety, upend his schedule, deplete his bank balance, and become dirty and bloody to help a person of another race and social class?

And why would Jesus tell us, “Go and do likewise”?

The Good Samaritan didn’t ignore the battered man on the Jericho road. Like him, we’re aware of people in need around us—the widow next door, the family strapped with medical bills, the homeless man outside our church. God calls us to help them, whether they need shelter, assistance, medical care, or just friendship.

Tim Keller shows that caring for these people is the job of every believer, as fundamental to Christian living as evangelism, discipleship, and worship. But he doesn’t stop there. He shows how we can carry out this vital ministry as individuals, families, and churches.

Review

"There was a point in my pastoral ministry when I looked for a steady hand on mine as I tried to navigate the swirling waters of mercy ministries, in an urban setting, alongside a deep commitment to heralding the God's word in the exposition of Scripture. Not surprisingly, I found it in Tim Keller's Ministries of Mercy. The very title was a bright light in the fog of those days. I think others will find it to be the same for them even 25 years later."--John Piper, Founder and Teacher, www.desiringGod.org; Chancellor, Bethlehem College and Seminar
